"No Gimmicks, No Tie-ins, Just Excellent Local Vet Care"

Veterinary UltrasoundWhen we need to reach a diagnosis In the Pets’n’Vets Family of Practices, we would preferably do so in a non-invasive, non-surgical manner.

Veterinary Ultrasonography is one example of a non-invasive method that we use regularly as part of our diagnostic work up.  We currently have Ultrasound machines at both our Pets’n’Vets Pollokshaws Practice and our Pets’n’Vets East Kilbride Practice, we have plans to add a third machine which will be installed at McDonald Vets Scotstoun very soon. In the meantime, and as ever, all equipment is shared amongst the Pets’n’Vets Family of practices.

Ultrasound was initially developed for use in scanning the ocean floor; it was further developed by Ian Donald (in Scotland) in the 1950s for medical use.

The science behind sonography is based on sound waves bouncing off different types of materials; fluid, gas and differing densities of tissue- the machine detects the return of those signals and uses the information to create a picture. It is a useful technique used in imaging different types of tissue in different areas of the body.

In human medicine, ultrasonography is well-known for use in pregnancy diagnosis and determination of stage of pregnancy. In veterinary medicine our most common use of ultrasound is to image areas such as the abdomen and chest or heart of small animals.

I can recall the case of ‘Smokey’ who was an older dog with a history of tiredness and weakness. We successfully managed to accurately diagnose a tumour in ‘Smokey’s’ spleen and consequently removed the spleen through surgery.

We use ultrasonography on a daily basis at Pets’n’Vets and all our vets are confident and competent in its use as a diagnostic tool.
