Our Nursing Staff and Receptionists

The Pets’n’Vets Family Nursing Staff and Receptionists are a fantastic group of multi-tasking people.

Our Nurses

The unsung heroes of The Pets‘n’Vets Family are our fantastic Veterinary Nursing Staff; a team of greatly experienced, caring and devoted nurses, each with particular veterinary interests.

In The Pets‘n’Vets Family we are delighted to have a very well qualified body of nursing staff, in the main Qualified Veterinary Nurses or nurses who are in the processes of training. Our nurses have the training, skill, facilities and time required to provide your pet with the very best care whilst they are with us.

There are several different types of Veterinary Nursing Staff in The Pets‘n’Vets Family:

Registered and Qualified Veterinary Nurses (RVNs) – These nurses hold either a Degree or a Diploma in Veterinary Nursing, having studied towards their qualifications for 3-4 years. The course itself is extensive, requiring detailed knowledge of all aspects of Veterinary Practice and animal care with constant assessment and examinations. Places on the VN course are now highly competitive and reserved for only the best and most committed individuals. Veterinary Nursing is constantly evolving as a profession and in recent times has pushed for a greater degree of professional standing, organisation and responsibility. Qualified Veterinary Nurses are permitted to carry out a number of veterinary procedures including some operations, some dental treatments, placing intra-venous catheters, and monitoring anaesthetics.

Trainee Veterinary Nurses (TVNs) – Trainee Veterinary Nurses are enrolled in one of the accredited Veterinary Nurse Courses; they are usually students on block placements gaining experience in real-life practice. In Pets‘n’Vets we have a number of trainees who were employees in whom we saw great potential and who we are sponsoring through their nursing course. These are the nurses with the most up to date nursing knowledge and have as much to give to their training practice as they have to gain. We are delighted to have had 4 of our practices designated as Veterinary Nurse Training Practices (VNTPs) by the local nursing colleges, and are delighted to be facilitating the training for 5 very talented veterinary nurses.

Animal Nursing Assistants (ANAs) – An Animal Nursing Assistant has a qualification in all aspects of assisting with small animal care. The course is usually done by distance learning from a base veterinary practice and has a very in-depth syllabus with a large proportion of real-life case based course work. The qualification usually takes a full year to complete although will take longer depending on the availability of relevant cases. We are delighted to have been involved with a number of our staff becoming certified Animal Nursing Assistants, and they form a very important part of our team.

Animal Nursing Auxiliaries – An Animal Nursing Auxiliary assists Veterinary Nurses with some aspects of in-patient care. These are important members of staff who may be greatly experienced in what they do or may be gaining experience prior to initiating formal training.

The Pets‘n’Vets Family is committed to furthering Veterinary Education in Glasgow. If you would like more details on Veterinary Nursing, please email our Head Nurse Jane O’Rourke VN jane.orourke@petsnvets.org.

Our Reception Staff

Our wonderful receptionists can offer advice when required, create the perfect appointment for your pet, organise medication for collection, and generally be a friendly voice on the end of a phone or a friendly face in person.

All our receptionists are animal lovers and will be more than delighted to chat to you about your pet, be that on the phone or in person.

So feel free to pick up the phone and see if they can help; we are ready and waiting!
