"We want to help you become a Vet because we wanted to be one too!"

How We Became Vets

Nikki Lough being a vet

Deciding what you want to be in life is a big decision; for some of our vets the decision was very easy - Nikki, Emma and Fiona for instance knew they were going to be vets as far back as they can remember, whereas Oliver was initially going to be a human doctor and changed his mind just before starting the course,

"I was due to start Human Medicine at Glasgow University but decided to take a gap year before starting, during that year I travelled and whilst doing so did some volunteering, I found that I was the first to volunteer to help out where animals were involved but the last to want to work in a hospital or doctors surgery. It dawned on me that a career in Veterinary was exactly what I wanted! "Easy, Ill swap courses," I thought - little did I know that it would take me another 2 years of gaining animal experience, working in vets (mainly Pets′n‘Vets) and re-sitting exams - to get a place at Glasgow University Veterinary School! Boy, was it tough....but was it worth it!"

The problem with wanting to gain a place in Veterinary School is that it is an extremely popular course with a limited number of places. The result is that there is strong competition for each place; a prospective Veterinary student will need great exam results, including at least two sciences, lots of relevant experience as well as something extra-curricular to talk about.

One of our Partners, Ivor is on the admissions panel of Glasgow University Veterinary School - he is a great person to get advice from if you are considering a career in Veterinary.

If you are sure that veterinary medicine is for you - we‘d love to meet you! We offer placements where you can gain some of that vital experience.

If you‘d like to apply, please send a letter or email to info@petsnvets.org.
