"No Gimmicks, No Tie-ins, Just Excellent Local Vet Care"

EndoscopeOne of the Pets’n’Vets Family’s most recently added pieces of equipment is our endoscope.

As with ultrasound, endoscopy is a means of diagnosing a disease or ailment without the need for surgery. This technique involves the use of a camera attached to a long tube and enables us to take a live video of certain areas of the body.

Endoscopy is a technique originally employed in human medicine, but given the need for more advanced imaging techniques, vets around the world are successfully using it.

The endoscope is a versatile piece of equipment. It can be used to image mainly oesophagus, stomach and part of the small intestine, the airway and lungs, and the large intestine.

An added feature of endoscopy is its use to acquire biopsies of tissue. This is done by a process called a grab biopsy. Prior to endoscopy the only means of getting such a biopsy would have been through major abdominal surgery. Our endoscope can also be used to gather fluid samples from the airways when lung disease is suspected. The process of imaging the smaller airways is called bronchoscopy and the gathering of samples is known as bronchoalveolar lavage. Again, the major benefits of endoscopy are its non-invasive nature and its efficiency in reaching a diagnosis, particularly when surgical intervention is not desired.

One further use of our endoscope is the retrieval of foreign objects from pets’ stomachs. Pets sometimes eatwhat they shouldn’t! To avoid the risk of foreign objects becoming lodged in the pet’s intestines, the endoscope could be used to retrieve it from the stomach without the need for costly and invasive surgery.

There are very little side effects to the animal using this procedure, and it is often employed at Pets’n’Vets.
